Your Voice. Your Ward. Your Opportunity to Lead. Sedalia Opens Process for First Ward City Council Appointment

The City of Sedalia is inviting residents of the First Ward to step forward and make a difference.

With a recent vacancy on the City Council, Mayor Andrew Dawson is launching an open and community-minded appointment process–going beyond state requirements to ensure the public has a chance to observe, engage, and even participate in the future of their ward.

Missouri law (RSMO 77.450) allows the mayor to appoint someone to fill a vacant council seat with the consent of a majority of current council members. But rather than handling this quietly behind closed doors, Mayor Dawson has chosen to bring the community in every step of the way.

“We want this process to reflect the values of our city–honesty, inclusion, and public service,” said Mayor Dawson. “If you live in the First Ward and care about where we’re headed, I encourage you to apply. Your voice matters, and your perspective could help shape Sedalia’s future.”

What Residents Can Expect

Step 1: Apply to Serve
Any qualified First Ward resident who’s interested in local government and community improvement is encouraged to apply. Whether you’ve served before or this is your first time getting involved, your passion and commitment are what matter most. Please submit completed application to the City Clerk’s Office at jmyers@sedalia.com.

Step 2: Thoughtful Review
Mayor Dawson will review applications with the Finance & Administration Committee, taking time to consider each applicant’s background, vision, and connection to the community.

Step 3: Interviews You Can Watch
Applicants moving to the next phase will be invited to a live, in-person interview in Council Chambers. These interviews will be streamed online and saved for later viewing, so the public can stay informed and engaged.

Step 4: Selection with Care
Following the interviews, Mayor Dawson may nominate one candidate for City Council approval. If no clear fit emerges, the process will remain open until the right person steps forward.

This is more than just filling a seat–it’s about finding someone who reflects the spirit of the First Ward: hardworking, community-minded, and ready to lead.

“We need someone who’s committed, engaged, and genuinely cares about Sedalia,” said Dawson. “If you’re ready to step up and serve your community–or know someone who is–now is the time to act.”

City government works best when it reflects the people it serves. This open appointment process is a chance for First Ward residents to step forward–not just to fill a role, but to represent their neighbors, bring new ideas to the table, and help guide Sedalia’s path forward. If you have a heart for service and a vision for your community, you are invited to take that first step.
