Utilities Department to Conduct Smoke Testing — Covered Bridge Estates: Travis Drive and Flat Creek Drive — Friday, September 18, 2026

On Friday, September 18, 2026, the City of Sedalia’s Utilities Department will be conducting smoke tests of the sewer system in Covered Bridge Estates on Travis Drive and Flat Creek Drive, weather permitting. Smoke testing involves blowing air and smoke into the sewer system through manholes. Smoke testing is one technique used to identify structural defects to sewer pipes or areas where there may be leaking joints in the sewer pipe requiring repair.

As noted on the door hanger, we are requesting those homeowners and businesses where someone has respiratory problems and/or is immobile to please notify the Utilities Department at (660) 827-7830 prior to the date scheduled for testing. The smoke that exits the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground from smoke testing is non-toxic, harmless, and has no odor. It does not create a fire hazard.

Homeowners do not need to be home while smoke testing is occurring. Staff will be documenting the testing, taking photos and measurements, so that any defects found may be repaired later.
