Structural Engineer Deems 207 W. Main Street Building in Imminent Danger of Collapse
UPDATE: A licensed structural engineer has completed the initial inspection of the vacant building located at 207 W. Main Street. His initial impression is that the structure is in a state of collapse and will require immediate and extreme repairs to be stabilized; otherwise, demolition will be necessary.
The City of Sedalia expects to receive a summary “quick report” of the engineer’s findings within days, with the full report anticipated within two weeks. Based on the engineer’s professional assessment and the severity of the conditions observed, the City intends to pursue a court order for demolition thereafter.
The property owners have been formally notified of the situation. The structural engineer also noted that the buildings connected to 207 W. Main are at risk if a collapse occurs. In his professional opinion, a collapse would likely result in debris being propelled outward, creating a significant safety hazard for adjacent structures and public spaces. Accordingly, the barriers will remain up and the eastbound lane of Main Street will remain closed.
In coordination with safety precautions, Liberty Utilities made the decision last night to cap the gas lines at the street level rather than excavating Main Street. While gas service to the building had been shut off for at least five years, capping the lines at the street is a critical safety step. If a structure collapses, it can damage underground utility lines, potentially causing leaks or ruptures. By sealing the gas line at its main distribution point, Liberty Utilities has eliminated the possibility of residual or pressurized gas entering the area. This action also removes a significant fire or explosion risk to surrounding buildings, first responders, and the public.
Our responsibility is to protect the public. We’re following all legal and safety protocols to address this situation quickly and carefully. Further updates will be provided as formal documentation is received and next steps are confirmed.
