SFCC Students Partner with Sedalia Police to Enhance Drone Safety Technology
A talented group of students and educators were recognized at the Sedalia City Council meeting on March 16, 2026. The group partnered with the Sedalia Police Department to solve a “real-world problem using innovation, technology, and teamwork,” according to Chief of Police David Woolery.
During the execution of a search warrant, the police department utilized its DJI Avata drone. The residence had very little lighting, which exposed a limitation with the light kit previously installed on the drone. Detective Nick Camirand explained that “the lights pointed straight ahead and provided little downward illumination in front of the drone.” Drones are a vital tool for officers, allowing them to safely assess unfamiliar spaces and identify potential hazards while reducing risk. Because of this, Detective Camirand reached out to State Fair Community College (SFCC) to explore a potential collaboration and solution. He connected with Madison Hercules, EDT Program Coordinator, and her students, who immediately expressed interest in assisting the department.
Using SFCC’s collaborative lab, the students designed and produced a new light mount using 3D printing technology. The updated design adjusts one of the lights downward by approximately 20 degrees, eliminating the blind spot and allowing officers to better see objects on the ground during drone operations.
The students followed the full engineering process, including identifying the problem, creating a digital design, producing prototypes, testing materials, and refining the final product. The result is a light mount that is lightweight, durable, and effective. Chief Woolery noted that the new mount “enhances the ability of our police department to safely operate this technology in the field. This project is a great example of what can happen when education, technology, and public service come together.”
These students applied their skills to solve a real-world problem that benefits the community and supports the men and women who serve the City of Sedalia. We thank the students and instructors for their willingness to partner with the police department and for their participation in this valuable hands-on learning experience.
