Sedalia Earns 2024 Tree City USA Recognition from Arbor Day Foundation
The City of Sedalia has once again earned national recognition for its commitment to environmental stewardship and community beautification, having been named a 2024 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.
The designation honors Sedalia’s dedication to urban forestry and its investment in planting, caring for, and celebrating trees across the community. Sedalia’s efforts help improve public health, bolster climate resilience, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents–all while preserving the city’s natural charm and historical character.
“This well-deserved recognition is a testament to our community’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility,” said Interim City Administrator Matthew Wirt. “Our investment in trees is an investment in Sedalia’s future–one that brings measurable benefits to our residents, from cleaner air and lower energy costs to healthier neighborhoods and improved property values.”
To achieve Tree City USA status, Sedalia met the program’s four core standards: establishing a tree board or department, adopting a public tree care ordinance, committing at least $2 per capita to urban forestry, and holding an official Arbor Day observance.
Sedalia joins more than 3,500 communities nationwide that have earned the Tree City USA distinction since the program’s founding in 1976. The recognition places Sedalia within a growing network of cities that prioritize green infrastructure as critical to livability, sustainability, and community health.
“Tree champions like Sedalia are leading the way,” said Michelle Saulnier, Vice President of Programs at the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees are critical infrastructure, building resiliency and fostering good health in our nation’s cities. We’re proud Sedalia is part of the growing Tree City USA network.”
In urban areas, trees help combat the heat island effect, reduce stormwater runoff, filter air pollutants, and even improve mental well-being. When strategically planted, they can also lower residential energy costs, buffer noise, and support wildlife habitats.
In an official letter of recognition, Arbor Day Foundation CEO Dan Lambe praised Sedalia’s leadership, writing: “By prioritizing tree stewardship, you’ve not only helped enhance Sedalia’s beauty and livability, but you’ve also invested in a healthier, more sustainable future for your residents.”
The City of Sedalia will continue its tree-focused initiatives throughout the year, including public education, planting projects, and community engagement efforts in celebration of Arbor Day.
