The Big Rub Gravel Bike Race Rolls into Sedalia this Weekend

Cyclists from across Missouri and beyond will converge on Sedalia this Saturday, July 12, for The Big Rub, a challenging and scenic gravel bike race that showcases the best of the region’s rural roads and welcoming spirit.
The event, which has become a summer staple for gravel enthusiasts, will be headquartered at the historic Katy Depot at 600 East Third Street. Riders of all experience levels can choose from three distances: a 25K fun ride (about 16 miles), a 50K gravel challenge (about 32 miles), or the signature 100K competitive rate (about 64 miles) with men’s and women’s categories.
The action begins Friday evening with a welcome reception and packet pickup from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Katy Depot. Riders can check in, collect their event T-shirts, and enjoy a relaxed evening meeting fellow cyclists and locals.
On race day, Saturday, the schedule kicks off early with packet pickup and check-in from 6 to 7:30 a.m. A pre-race briefing is set for 7:45 a.m., with all riders rolling out at 8 a.m. sharp. Participants will head onto winding gravel roads that cut through the heart of Pettis County, offering a mix of rolling hills, open farmland, and Missouri backroad charm.
The finish-line celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Katy Depot grounds, featuring food vendors, live music, and a festival-like atmosphere for riders and spectators alike. An awards ceremony will cap the day at 3 p.m.
Registration is $40 per rider, which includes participation in any of the three distances, an event T-shirt, and a finish-line meal. Riders can sign up in advance online or register in person during Friday evening pickup or Saturday morning check-in.
Organizers encourage early arrival on race day, and convenient parking is available in downtown Sedalia and near the Katy Trailhead.
Events like The Big Rub underscore Sedalia’s reputation as a gateway to Missouri’s gravel-riding scene and a destination for visitors eager to experience the outdoors. Riders often book overnight stays at area accommodations ranging from boutique hotels like The Bothwell to local bed-and-breakfasts and campgrounds. Beyond the race, Sedalia offers visitors a chance to explore historic downtown architecture, museums, restaurants, and the famous Katy Trail State Park.
While the ride offers a personal challenge for cyclists, it’s also a community event. Families, residents, and visitors are encouraged to come downtown on Saturday to cheer on riders, enjoy the food and music, and soak in the festival atmosphere.
