The Parks Maintenance Technician II performs skilled custodial, facility, and grounds maintenance throughout the park system, with primary responsibility for Convention Hall, Moore's Train House, Liberty Park restrooms, and shelter houses. Work includes cleaning and maintaining facilities, setting up and breaking down for events, performing minor repairs, operating equipment, assisting with seasonal displays, and maintaining the Liberty Land Flyer train and track. The employee works independently within established procedures and may provide task guidance to part-time or seasonal staff. Work is normally performed under a supervisor who issues work orders and instructions on your schedule. This position requires flexibility as new developments may change the necessity of a custodian to be on site. This job will be flexible in hours where there may be morning shifts and evening shifts.

Key Responsibilities:

Facility Custodial Work

  1. Clean and maintain Convention Hall, Moore’s Train House, Liberty Park restrooms, shelter houses, and other assigned areas.
  2. Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and polish floors; clean windows, fixtures, furniture, and surfaces.
  3. Empty trash and recycling and remove litter.
  4. Restock custodial supplies and monitor inventory.

Event Preparation & Support

  1. Set up, arrange, and take down tables, chairs, and equipment for rentals, programs, and special events.
  2. Prepare and maintain facilities and grounds for scheduled activities.

Maintenance & Repairs

  1. Inspect buildings and grounds for cleanliness, damage, and safety concerns.
  2. Perform minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and equipment repairs within training and ability.
  3. Monitor HVAC performance and provide HVAC maintenance at Convention Hall (filter replacement and lubrication).
  4. Assist with small construction tasks such as forming and finishing concrete.

Grounds & Equipment Work

  1. Perform grounds maintenance including moving, trimming, planting, tree care, and debris removal.
  2. Remove snow and ice and apply ice-control materials as needed.
  3. Operate and maintain equipment such as mowers, utility vehicles, and skid steers.
  4. Check fluids, change filters, clean equipment, and maintain service records.
  5. Safely mix and apply herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and cleaning chemicals.

Train Maintenance

  1. Maintain the Liberty Land Flyer train, track, train house, and related facilities.
  2. Conduct and document required safety inspections.
  3. Before operations, ensure the track is clear, the train is fueled, and the train house is clean and organized.
  4. Coordinate repairs with maintenance staff or outside vendors.

Team Support

  1. Provide limited work direction and on-the-job training to seasonal, part-time, or community service workers.
  2. Use supplies responsibly and support cost-saving purchasing practices.
  3. Assist with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Valid Missouri driver’s license and clean driving record.
  3. Two years of hands-on building or grounds maintenance experience.
  4. CPR/AED and standard First Aid certification required within 60 days of employment.
  5. Must be willing and available to work early morning, morning, afternoon, evening, overnight.
  6. Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening; subject to random testing.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of using cleaning equipment and chemical components.
  2. Skills in cleaning and sanitizing equipment and building needs.
  3. Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision and establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, other department staff, and the public.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Custodial methods, cleaning chemicals, and sanitation practices.
  2. General building grounds maintenance techniques.
  3. Basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, irrigation, and equipment maintenance.
  4. Safe inspection and operation procedures for the train and track.
  5. Skill in operating light and heavy equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
  6. Ability to identify hazards and necessary repairs.
  7. Ability to work independently, manage changing priorities, and maintain accurate records.
  8. Ability to monitor supplies within budget limits.
  9. Ability to provide task guidance to part-time and seasonal staff.
  10. Effective communication and positive public interaction.

Guidelines:

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, Health Department codes, and American Red Cross guidelines. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

Physical Demands:

Duties require frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and tool use. The employee may move furniture, equipment, and supplies and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Work requires manual dexterity, depth perception, color distinction, and the ability to operate vehicles and equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

Principal Working Relationships:

  1. Reports to the Assistant Director of Parks. Contacts are typically with co-workers, community members, coaches, officials, concession workers, and lifeguards.
  2. Works independently in carrying out assignments under City, Department and Division policies and procedures, and applicable federal, state and local regulations.

Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

  1. The work can be a wide variety of cleaning the facility to setting up sporting events, picking up equipment and setting up tables and chairs for large programs. It is mainly an inside job but will be required to go outside to clear sidewalks and pick up trash around the facility and empty trash cans.
  2. Work is both inside and outside. Late hours can also play part in the work of a Park Custodian.

The work is performed inside our facility buildings, concession stand, or outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

Work occurs indoors and outdoors in park facilities, grounds, restrooms, shelter houses, and maintenance areas. Conditions may include noise, dust, cleaning chemicals, machinery, biological contaminants, and varying weather. Personal protective equipment may be required.
