Custodians employed for the Parks and Recreation Department will be in charge of using proper methods and materials in cleaning and caring for park facilities and equipment care. Work is normally performed under a supervisor who issues work orders and instructions on your schedule. This position requires flexibility as new developments may change the necessity of a custodian to be on site. This job will be flexible in hours where there may be morning shifts and evening shifts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   1. Scrub, mop, vacuum, sweep, polish floors, and clean fixtures in various activity rooms. Clean restrooms, locker rooms, equipment, office space, lobbies, lounges, hallways and stairways.
  2. Dust and polish furniture.
  3. Wash windows, door panels, walls, toilet cleaning, and cleaning light fixtures.
  4. Empty all trash cans daily.
  5. Move office furniture and equipment when needed.
  6. Set up chairs, tables and equipment for meetings, classes, special events, sports, etc.
  7. May perform miscellaneous pick-up and delivery of errands as required.
  8. Replace or clean heating, cooling, and ventilation filters on an established schedule.
  9. Clean snow and debris from facility related sidewalks. Apply salt to sidewalks when needed.
  10. Notify management concerning needs for major repairs or additions in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and/or heating and cooling fixtures and components.
  11. Employee must use good safety awareness and judgment in all aspects of the position.
  12. Exhibit an authoritative but approachable presence that will work with the community and when
    handling those not following the rules and policies.
  13. Recognize potentially dangerous situations and respond in the safest and most effective manner.
  14. Notify supervisor when damages have been done, thefts have occurred, or any other accidents or
    irregular activity.
  15. Follow all city and park enforced safety laws and regulations.
  16. Attend and actively participate in all mandatory training sessions.
  17. Maintain first-aid, CPR and AED certifications, as well as knowing all safety and emergency procedures for the facility and being able to act quickly and responsibly in emergencies.
  18. Assists other staff with first-aid and CPR/AED in the event of an emergency.
  19. Complete and turn in reports and forms in a timely fashion. Timesheets must be turned in timely and during the correct pay period.
  20. Work special events and promotional opportunities, as scheduled or assigned that may take place on evenings, weekends, holidays and across the park systems.
  21. Assist with other duties as assigned.

Condition of Employment

  1. Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen and agree to be subject to random drug screens throughout employment.
  2. Must pass a background criminal investigation check.
  3. Must be willing and available to work early morning, morning, afternoon, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts as scheduled by the immediate supervisor, not to exceed 1,500 hours per year.
  4. CPR/AED and standard first aid certification are required within 60 days of employment.
  5. Clean driving record

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School diploma or GED.
  2. Experience in the field of Custodial and working with the public.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of using cleaning equipment and chemical components.
  2. Skills in cleaning and sanitizing equipment and building needs.
  3. Ability to work effective with minimum supervision and establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, other department staff, and the public.

  1. The work can be a wide variety from cleaning the facility to setting up sporting events, picking up equipment and setting up table and chairs for large programs. It is mainly an inside job but will be required to go outside to clear sidewalks and pick up trash around the facility and empty trash cans.
  2. Work is both inside and outside. Late hours can also play part in the work of Park Custodian.

Work Environment

The work is performed inside our facility buildings, concession stands, or outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
