The purpose of this position is to provide American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid, and other authorized certification courses in accordance with current American Red Cross standards. This position is responsible for preparing, conducting, evaluating, and documenting certification courses while maintaining a safe and positive learning environment. The Lifeguard Instructor serves as a professional representative of the City of Sedalia Parks and Recreation Department and assists with staff development by helping ensure employees are trained and certified.

1. Teach American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid, and other authorized courses in accordance with current American Red Cross standards.
2. Evaluate participant knowledge and skills using American Red Cross testing criteria.
3. Certify participants who successfully meet all course requirements.
4. Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, equipment, and training areas prior to each course.
5. Maintain accurate records and submit all required American Red Cross documentation in a timely manner.
6. Ensure all training equipment is maintained, inspected, cleaned, and ready for instruction.
7. Provide a safe, positive, and professional learning environment for all participants.
8. Demonstrate and reinforce proper lifeguarding, rescue, CPR, AED, and first aid techniques.
9. Monitor participant safety during all classroom and in-water training activities.
10. Assist with lifeguard staff in-service training and continuing education programs.
11. Mentor and develop new lifeguards to improve knowledge, confidence, and job performance.
12. Maintain current American Red Cross Instructor certification and stay current on all curriculum updates and teaching requirements.
13. Communicate effectively with participants, staff, and supervisors regarding course expectations and participant progress.
14. Promote professionalism, customer service, and a positive image of the City of Sedalia Parks and Recreation Department.
15. Assist with opening, closing, and general operations of the aquatic facilities as assigned.
16. Perform lifeguarding duties when assigned and maintain all required lifeguard certifications.
17. Enforce all facility rules, departmental policies, and American Red Cross standards.
18. Work as a team member with other employees.
19. Communicate effectively with other City employees, both orally and in writing.
20. Work autonomously when necessary.
21. Deal with others in a professional manner.
22. Maintain professional composure in stressful or emergency situations.

Job Context:

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor position is a part-time position located at Heckart Community Center and the Liberty Pool. The immediate supervisor for this position is the Aquatics Manager. The person in this position may work independently while conducting certification courses and training staff, with general supervision from aquatics management. During the summer season, this position may work outdoors for extended periods.

The Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for ensuring American Red Cross courses are conducted in accordance with current Red Cross standards, maintaining accurate certification records, and providing quality instruction to participants. The position is accountable for participant safety during all classroom and aquatic instruction, as well as the proper use and care of training equipment.

In this position, there is exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials in the form of pool chemicals, cleaning supplies, bloodborne pathogens, and other bodily fluids encountered during first aid and emergency response training. The stress level associated with this position is moderate to high due to teaching, evaluating participant performance, maintaining certification standards, and responding appropriately to emergency situations. Physical work consists of, but is not limited to, standing, walking, swimming, demonstrating rescue techniques, lifting training equipment, and performing CPR and water rescues when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications, Training, or Experience to Start:

1. Must possess and maintain a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification.
2. Must possess and maintain a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
3. Must be at least 17 years of age.
4. Previous experience as a certified lifeguard required, previous instructional teaching experience preferred.
5. Ability to teach and evaluate participants according to current American Red Cross standards.
6. Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with participants, staff, and the public.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
8. Possess excellent customer service, leadership, and organizational skills.
9. Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required American Red Cross course documentation.
10. Reliable transportation.
11. Must have a working phone number at which the employee can be contacted directly.
12. Valid email address.
13. Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
14. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
15. Knowledge of public safety practices, emergency response procedures, and the operation of relevant lifesaving equipment.

Physical Demands:

• While performing the essential functions of this job some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of sitting, standing, walking and/or swimming outdoors in summer heat.
• Emergency tasks and training involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing or swimming, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy and/or heavy objects, materials and/or persons (20-250 pounds).
• Certain duties of this position are classified as “safety-sensitive.” Therefore, the person in this position will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis in accordance with the City’s Alcohol & Controlled Substance Use, Abuse and Testing Policy.
