Job Scope:
This position is responsible for the protection of life and property by controlling and extinguishing fires, rescuing injured and trapped persons, rendering medical care, mitigating hazardous materials, and assisting in support roles as needed. This position is responsible to the station Captain and/or Lieutenant. Successful performance helps to ensure the safety of personnel and the public.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs the functions of fire suppression, EMS, Haz-Mat, and rescue.
- Participates in training to prepare for the departments all-hazards operations.
- Drive smaller fire department vehicles and apparatus ass assigned.
- Cleans, inspects, and maintains equipment, facilities, and grounds; documents needed repairs.
- Participates in support services to ensure a state of readiness.
- Participates in community risk reduction and public education programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED
- Must be 18 at time of employment
- Valid Missouri driver’s license
- Must obtain the following certifications within one year of employment:
a. Missouri Firefighter I and II
b. Missouri EMT-B license
c. Child Safety Seat Technician Certification through an approved provider - All licenses/certifications must be maintained throughout employment
- Must successfully complete pre-employment physical, and agree to be subject to random drug screen throughout employment
- Must successfully pass all portions of the hiring process
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge in the various disciplines required within an all-hazards organization.
- Knowledge of NFPA standards.
- Knowledge of city ordinances and department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of City of Sedalia streets and addressing.
- Skill in using fire suppression and rescue equipment and tools.
- Skill in operating a computer and various software programs.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Guidelines:
- City ordinances, department standard operating procedures, and NFPA standards.
- Guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
Complexity:
The variety of fire and emergency situations encountered contributes to the complexity of the work.
Principal Working Relationships:
Co-workers, other City departments, other emergency response personnel, and the general public.
Purpose of Contacts:
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, resolve problems, motivate or influence persons, and clarify, justify, defend, negotiate, or settle matters.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools, and equipment which may include a motor vehicle, computer, generator, fire pump, fire hydrant, axe, shovel, hydraulic tools, power tools, hand tools, and possibly medical equipment, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work.
Work Environment:
The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, and other firefighting gear.
