Custodians employed for the Parks and Recreation Department will be in charge of using proper methods and materials in cleaning and caring for park facilities and equipment care. Work is normally performed under a supervisor who issues work orders and instructions on your schedule. This position requires flexibility as new developments may change the necessity of a custodian to be on site. Work is performed under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, with flexibility to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Job Scope:
The Custodian reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and assists with cleaning up, set-up, and general maintenance tasks throughout the facility. The position requires the ability to follow instructions, work independently, and respond to custodial needs during operating hours and events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. - Clean and sanitize restrooms, party rooms, offices, kitchen, and public spaces.
- Sweep, mop, scrub, vacuum, and polish floors in all facility areas.
- Clean windows, doors, walls, furniture, fixtures, and light covers.
- Empty trash cans and recycling bins; ensure waste is removed daily.
- Set up and take down tables, chairs, and equipment for parties, rentals, and events.
- Assist with bowling lane and lobby cleanliness, including ball returns, scoring areas, and seating.
- Assist with snow removal, sidewalk clearing, and trash pick-up around the exterior of the building.
- Monitor facility for cleanliness and promptly address spills, restocking, or urgent cleaning needs.
- Report maintenance issues or repair needs to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Follow all safety procedures for use of chemicals and equipment.
- Provide support during emergencies, including assisting with First Aid/CPR if certified.
- Work special events and promotional opportunities as assigned, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform other related duties as assigned. Clean snow and debris from facility related sidewalks. Apply salt to sidewalks when needed.
- Notify management concerning needs for major repairs or additions in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and/or heating and cooling fixtures and components.
- Employee must use good safety awareness and judgment in all aspects of the position.
- Exhibit an authoritative but approachable presence that will work with the community and when handling those not following the rules and policies.
- Recognize potentially dangerous situations and respond in the safest and most effective manner.
- Notify supervisor when damages have been done, thefts have occurred, or any other accidents or irregular activity.
- Follow all city and park enforced safety laws and regulations.
- Attend and actively participate in all mandatory training sessions.
- Maintain First Aid, CPR and AED certifications, as well as knowing all safety and emergency procedures for the facility and being able to act quickly and responsibly in emergencies.
- Assists other staff with First-Aid and CPR/AED in the event of an emergency.
- Complete and turn in reports and forms in a timely fashion. Timesheets must be turned in timely and during the correct pay period.
- Work special events and promotional opportunities, as scheduled or assigned that may take place on evenings, weekends, holidays and across the park systems.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
Condition of Employment:
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen and agree to be subject to random drug screen throughout employment.
- Must pass a Background Criminal Investigation check.
- Must be willing and available to work early morning, morning, afternoon, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts as scheduled by immediate supervisor, not to exceed 1,500 hours per year.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED
- Prior custodial or facility cleaning experience preferred.
- Experience working with the public.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and chemical use.
- Ability to maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff and the public.
Guidelines:
Work is performed in accordance with departmental custodial standards, safety protocols, and industry cleaning guidelines. Judgment is required in selecting appropriate cleaning methods and responding to urgent situations.
Complexity:
The work consists of routine custodial tasks with additional responsibilities for event set-up and responding to immediate cleaning needs during high customer traffic. The fast-paced and varied nature of a recreation facility contributes to the complexity of the position.
Principal Working Relationships:
- Internal: Maintenance Supervisor, Bowling Center Manager, Kitchen Supervisor, Operations Coordinator, and other Parks & Recreation staff.
- External: General public, rental clients, vendors, and contractors as needed.
Purpose of Contacts:
Contacts are made to exchange information, coordinate cleaning tasks, support staff, and provide a safe and clean environment for the public.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Work involves use of cleaning tools, mops, vacuums, and equipment requiring manual dexterity.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed indoors in a recreation facility, with occasional work outdoors (sidewalks, trash removal, snow;/ice clearing). The position may be exposed to cleaning chemicals, machinery with moving parts, noise, and varying temperatures. Use of protective gear (gloves, goggles, masks) is required when appropriate.
