The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety of patrons at the City's Aquatic Facilities at Heckart Community Center and at Liberty Pool, by teaching swimming techniques, strokes, and water safety rules to students and adults with different levels of swimming abilities. The swim lesson instructor also asses the progress of the students and adults and adjusts the teaching program accordingly. The swim lesson instructor is responsible for ensuring that all swimming aids and equipment are in good working order, observing and enforcing the rules of the facility, and preparing reports on attendance, progress and accidents.

Job Scope:

The Private Lesson Swim Instructor position is part-time and located at Heckart Community Center and the Liberty Pool. The immediate supervisor for this position is the Aquatic Specialist. During the summer season the position may work outdoors. The Aquatic Specialist is accountable for the monetary, fiscal, safety, and legal issues for which this position is responsible. The stress level associated with this position is high, primarily due to being hyper vigilant, outdoors, and standing for long periods of time. Physical work consists of, but is not limited to, standing, climbing, bending, carrying, walking around obstacles, and lifting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assessing the skill level of students and tailoring lessons to their abilities and goals.
2. Teaching students various swimming techniques, water safety rules, and rescue skills.
3. Maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
4. Demonstrating proper swimming strokes and techniques.
5. Observing students during practice to evaluate their skills and recording their progress.
6. Providing feedback to students on their performance and ways to improve.
7. Responding to emergencies and providing first aid if necessary.
8. Communicating with parents or guardians about the student’s progress and skills learned.
9. Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene of the swimming pool area.
10. Organizing and facilitating water games and activities for students.
11. Planning and delivering lessons ensuring adherence to the scheme of work and lesson plans.
12. Instructing and demonstrating swimming techniques and strokes effectively.
13. Ensuring the safety of all students before, during, and after swimming lessons.
14. Identifying participants who need assistance and providing the necessary support.
15. Evaluating student performance, providing feedback and guiding students on their progress.
16. Ensuring all aquatic equipment is in good condition and stored correctly after use.

Minimum Qualifications, Training, or Experience to Start:

1. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age.
2. Must possess and maintain current Lifeguard Certification.
3. Reliable transportation.
4. Must have a working phone number and a valid email address at which the employee can be contacted directly.
5. Follow oral and written orders.
6. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees and the general public.
7. Possess customer service skills.
8. Public Safety including knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, and procedures.
9. Available to work evening, weekend and holiday work.
10. Basic Swim Instructor or Water Safety Instructor certification recommended but not required.

Physical Demands:

• While performing the essential functions of this job some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of sitting, standing, walking and/or swimming outdoors in summer heat.
• Emergency tasks and training involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing or swimming, and may involve the lifting, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy and/or heavy objects, materials and/or persons (20-250 pounds).
• Certain duties of this position are classified as “safety-sensitive.” Therefore, the person in this position will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis in accordance with the City’s Alcohol & Controlled Substance Use, Abuse and Testing Policy.
