Filing for Sedalia’s 2026 Municipal Election Opens December 9
The City of Sedalia will open the filing period for the 2026 municipal election on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. Residents who are interested in serving the community are encouraged to consider filing for one of the offices that will be on the ballot next spring.
On the first day of filing, the City Clerk’s Office will accept candidates beginning at 8:00 a.m. After the opening day, filings may be submitted Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. City Hall will be closed from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on December 19 and will also be closed all day on December 24 and 25. The filing period will close on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
Offices open for the April 7, 2026 election are:
- Mayor, four year term expiring April 2030
- Councilman, First Ward, one year term expiring April 2027
- Councilman, First Ward, two year term expiring April 2028
- Councilman, Second Ward, two year term expiring April 2028
- Councilman, Third Ward, two year term expiring April 2028
- Councilman, Fourth Ward, two year term expiring April 2028
To qualify for Mayor, candidates must be at least thirty years old, be a United States citizen, and must have lived within the city limits of Sedalia for at least two years prior to the election. Mayoral candidates must also submit a petition with at least one hundred signatures from registered Sedalia voters and pay a one hundred dollar filing fee.
Those wishing to serve on the Sedalia City Council must be at least twenty one years old, be a United States citizen, and must have lived in Sedalia for at least one year. Candidates must also have lived in the ward they hope to represent for at least six months prior to filing. Council candidates must submit a petition with at least twenty five signatures from registered voters within their ward and pay a fifty dollar filing fee.
Petition forms are available on the city website. All remaining forms, including the declaration of candidacy and the candidate affidavit, are available only through the City Clerk’s Office and must be completed in person when filing opens on December 9.
The general municipal election will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Voters will elect leaders who will guide Sedalia’s priorities, oversee city services, and shape decisions that affect daily life for families and businesses. Serving in local government is one of the most direct and meaningful ways residents can contribute to a stronger and more connected community.
