Sedalia Parks and Recreation is seeking dedicated individuals to operate the Liberty Park's Liberty Land Train at Moore's Train House, providing a fun and safe experience for guests of all ages. A train Engineer operates the locomotive and controls the train's speed and direction, while a train Conductor manages the train's operation, passengers, and ensures compliance with rules and regulations. Both roles are responsible for safety inspections, customer interactions, overall operations of the train, and play a key role in maintaining the charm and tradition of the Moore's Train House and Liberty Land Train.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Must be willing and able to perform both roles interchangeably. This is not a split or assigned position — all staff will be trained and expected to perform the full scope of both responsibilities during their shifts.
- Perform pre-operation inspections (fuel, brakes, oil, lights, wiring, etc.).
- Safely operate the miniature train at Liberty Park Railroad.
- Assist with loading/unloading passengers and deliver required safety briefings.
- Monitor and ensure the safety of all passengers during train rides.
- Use appropriate hand and horn signals per SPR protocols.
- Respond to emergency situations according to training and protocol (AED available on-site).
- Maintain communication with fellow crew members such as Conductor, Engineer, Admission Attendant, Program Specialist, and Maintenance staff.
- Follow weather protocol (no operation in rain, wet tracks, or lightning within 3 miles).
- Represent Sedalia Parks and Recreation with professionalism and friendliness.
- Conduct opening and closing procedures for Liberty Land Train.
- Communicate with customers in a polite and respectful manner.
- Communicate with Program Specialist of any products needed, broken equipment, suggestions, etc.
- Must wear provided staff uniform Moore’s Train House shirt and close toed shoes.
Duties specific to the Conductor (also referred to as Stationmaster):
The Stationmaster:
- Is in charge of safety for all passenger on or around the station platform.
- Will supervise the loading and unloading of all passengers (one passenger per seat unless the passenger is a small child who will need to be held by an older sibling or parent).
- Is responsible for the passenger briefing prior to giving the conductor the signal to depart. (The passenger safety briefing will be a prepared and approved script to be read exactly as written.).
- Will record on the train log, the number of passengers for each trip and number of trips made.
- Will signal returning trains that the station platform is clear for the train.
The Conductor:
- Is responsible for the safe operation of the train.
- Will maintain careful observation of all passenger to ensure that no passenger stands. leans out of the train or allows feet to remain on outside of passenger car while train is in motion.
- Will maintain communications with engineer of train while in motion using the trainline communication system that is located in the last seat of the last passenger car. (Should the trainline communications fail, a small hand held whistle is a suitable substitute so long it is known the engineer can hear the signals while operating the train.).
- Will conduct a walking inspection of the track and righ-of-way looking for abnormalities or defects in the track condition that could impact safe operations. The track inspection form will be provided and filed with train inspection form. (A second assigned crew member will assist in the required inspection and sign off on the inspection form.).
CONDUCTOR TRAINLINE SIGNALS
(0) = Indicates a short sound on the trainline communications system
(—) = Indicates a long sound on the trainline communication system
(00) = Signal to proceed forward
(000) = Signal to back up
(—) = Signal to stop the train
Duties specific to the Engineer:
The Engineer:
- Is responsible for the safe operation of the train.
- Will focus on track ahead being on constant look out for individuals, small animals or any foreign objects on the track being prepared to stop if required.
- Will maintain a safe speed at all times ensuring that speed does not exceed 7 mph.
- Must use caution and good judgment in starting and stopping trains.
- Must not allow a running locomotive to be left unattended.
- Will conduct the initial safety inspection of the locomotive and passenger cars using the approved inspection form as provided (a second assigned crew member will assist in the inspection and sign the required inspection form).
- Will be attentive to the trainline signals from the on-board conductor.
- Will comply with the SPR Code of Conduct-Liberty Land Train Checklist before Operating.
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications, Training, or Experience to Start:
- Must be at least 18 years old to be an Engineer. Conductors must be at least 16 years old.
- Will be required to successfully complete all pre-employment screenings.
- Must have a reliable transportation.
- Must have a working phone number at which the employee can be contacted directly.
- Ability to follow oral and written orders.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees and the general public.
- Previous experience in customer service, retail, or concession work, preferred.
- Familiarity with point-of-sale or cash register systems.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English), preferred.
- Must have knowledge of accounting procedures in handling large sums of money.
- Possess excellent customer service skills.
- Familiarity with basic mechanical operations (small engines, safety checks), preferred.
- First Aid/CPR or AED certification, preferred.
- Be able to work weekend shifts of 11 a.m. — 3 p.m. on Saturdays & 1 p.m. — 4 p.m. on Sundays. Additional shifts may be scheduled for private rentals, birthday parties, and school groups. Flexibility and communication is key.
Necessary knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Skill in directing crowds.
- Skill in operating light and heavy equipment.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Arrive and be ready for work 15 minutes before the scheduled time.

- Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to walk, stand, bend, crouch, and climb aboard the train throughout the shift.
- Must have adequate vision and hearing to safely monitor passengers and train signals.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods while operating or supervising the train.
- Must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, sun, and light wind.
- Must be physically capable of performing emergency stops and assisting passengers in the event of an evacuation.
- Certain duties of this position are classified as “safety-sensitive.” Therefore, the person in this position will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis in accordance with the City’s Alcohol & Controlled Substance Use, Abuse and Testing Policy.
Work Environment:
The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, and dirt, machinery with moving parts, exposed to sun and heat for extended periods and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
