(SEDALIA, MISSOURI) : The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded an $86,575 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to the Sedalia Fire Department (SFD) on Friday, January 4, 2008.  The grant award will fund a major portion of the $96,000 effort to upgrade the Department’s self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment.  In all, eighteen (18) new SCBA units – one unit per fire apparatus seat – will be purchased to provide the Department with the latest in life-saving technology.

“This grant award will allow the Sedalia Fire Department to upgrade the breathing apparatus that is vital to the safety of our firefighters.  The upgrade, which is necessary and would have been required during the coming budget year, will now be funded through mostly Federal dollars”, said Mayor Bob Wasson.  “I would like to thank Battalion Chief Paul Withers and Assistant to the City Administrator Brian Koral for their efforts in securing this funding for the Department.”

The new SCBA units will improve firefighter safety by reducing the physical stress caused by the current SCBA units.  The newer units will provide firefighters with better airflow control and are considerably lighter than previous versions, both of which greatly benefit firefighter well-being.  Additionally, by standardizing all SCBA equipment, all department members will be able to be immediately knowledgeable about the SCBA on every other departmental firefighter and will be able to offer assistance, as well as additional air, to their colleagues.

The SFD serves the residents of the City of Sedalia in central Missouri’s Pettis County. The Department is comprised of forty-one dedicated, professional fire fighters and is led by Chief Michael Ditzfeld and Deputy Chief Donald Meier.  The SFD responds to structure fires, wild land fires, vehicular accidents, search and rescue missions and a host of mutual aid situations with a fleet of two engines, one quint, one brush truck, one hazardous materials command vehicle and various support trailers.

Nationally, the AFG awards will ultimately provide approximately $490 million to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations throughout the country.

AFG awards aim to enhance response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public with respect to fire and other hazards.  The grants enable local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations to purchase or receive training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehicles.

“The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program has been instrumental in building capacity and providing needed resources for our nation’s firefighters,” said FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison.  “From the purchase of equipment to first responder training, the AFG program has helped improve response capabilities and saved lives and property in communities throughout the United States.”

Since 2004, AFG has provided almost $3.1 billion in grants to fire departments and first responder organizations to purchase response equipment, personal protective equipment, vehicles and fire prevention activities.  AFG is administered cooperatively by two FEMA components: the National Preparedness Directorate and the United States Fire Administration.
