Mayor Proclaims Disability Employment Awareness Month

(SEDALIA, MISSOURI) : On Monday, September 28, 2009, Mayor Mary Elaine Horn issued a proclamation designating October, 2009 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in Sedalia.

Text of Proclamation

WHEREAS: During Disability Employment Awareness Month, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that our great State’s promise extends to all our citizens.  Millions of Americans live with disabilities, and many other Americans will become disabled at some point in their lives.  To integrate people with disabilities more fully into every aspect of life, our country is working to advance greater freedoms at work, in schools, and throughout communities; and

WHEREAS: Recently the U.S. Department of Labor announced an official theme for October’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month titled “Expectation + Opportunity = Full Participation.”  It is intended to urge employers, as they seek to fill positions, to embrace the richness of America’s diversity by considering the talents of all workers, including workers with disabilities; and

WHEREAS: Both youth and adults with disabilities are currently the highest unemployed minority group in our country, and we all need to work together for equality and full participation, especially in the employment arena.  This year’s theme emphasizes the vision of the Labor Department’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), “a world in which people with disabilities have unlimited employment opportunities;” and

WHEREAS: By expanding employment opportunities and fighting false perceptions that hinder people living with disabilities from joining the workforce, we can uphold Missouri's moral values, strengthen our economy, and make Missouri a more hopeful place.  We must ensure that both people with disabilities and their employers expect that they will fully participate in our workplaces; and

WHEREAS: This expectation alone, however, is not enough.  People with disabilities must also have opportunity.  People with disabilities need access to a full range of employment choices to maximize their talents. With the expectation and the opportunity, people with disabilities will become full participants in our great State.

NOW THEREFORE, I, MARY ELAINE HORN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI do hereby proclaim the month of October 2009 to be "MISSOURI DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH" in Sedalia, Missouri and call upon all citizens of Sedalia to participate in this observance.
