Sedalia DREAM

Sedalia selected as a Missouri DREAM community

Governor Matt Blunt announced Tuesday, September 26, 2006 that Sedalia was selected as one of ten Missouri communities to be inducted into his Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri, or DREAM, Initiative.  The initiative will help Sedalia more efficiently and effectively engage in downtown redevelopment and revitalization efforts.  Participating cities receive planning assistance along with access to DREAM-focused state funding programs.

“Today I congratulate these communities as the first to be given this special designation.  They represent the potential for all Missouri’s diverse and historic towns and cities working to revitalize their downtowns and attract new private investment opportunities to the hearts of their communities,” Blunt said.

“As Governor Blunt tours our state and sees the beautiful historic buildings in our downtown, I appreciate his vision of ‘what can be’,” said Mayor Bob Wasson.  “The DREAM initiative will reinforce a sense of place and cultural heritage in the heart of Sedalia.  It will re-establish property use in the downtown core and, most importantly, attract private investment and new jobs.”

Sedalia will be an active member of the DREAM Initiative over the next three years.  During that time, Sedalia will have streamlined access to available programs including both technical and financial assistance for infrastructure improvements, historic preservation, affordable housing, community services, business development and job creation.  The goal is for the city to accomplish its revitalization and redevelopment goals more quickly than ever before, supported by DREAM’s comprehensive approach to concentrate resources and available tools.

Sedalia’s application was evaluated by representatives from the three DREAM Initiative partners, the Missouri Department of Economic Development, the Missouri Development Finance Board and the Missouri Housing Development Commission.  The evaluation process included attention to community capacity, vision, opportunity for private investment, broad community support and a comprehensive approach.

Gov. Blunt announced the DREAM inductees at the Governor’s Conference on Economic Development.  Visit the DREAM Initiative website for more details.
